To import products Magento offers a built-in option. It can be found at Administration Panel > System > Import/Export > Import. Using this option you can import data right from your computer to your store. Let’s consider it a little bit closer to understand what exactly you can do using it.
- You can choose entities you want to import in Entity Type field. Magento allows to move either Products or Customers.
- As for the ways of import, Magento offers three possible options: add new, update or delete existing data.
- The file type Magento allows to use for import is only CSV. It doesn’t work with XML, TXT and Excel files.
Magento CSV Requirements. There are no special requirements to a CSV file for Magento import.By default comma is a separator, in comparison to, for instance, VitrueMart, where the separator should be semicolon. One more requirement is that your data file should have UTF-8 encoding. It is generally required by all shopping carts, so that to identify everything right.
Usually, the CSV file that is sent by a supplier has UTF-8 encoding, so there is no need to change it. But if you have a file and you don’t know whether it is properly encoded or you make the file manually, it’s easy to make it UTF-8. You can use a CSV editor. Let’s see how it is done, for example, in OpenOffice Calc. You need to open your CSV then File > Save As > choose .csv > Save. In opened window press Keep Current Format > choose Unicode (UTF-8) > OK. Your CSV is ready to be imported to Magento.
If you have a data file in TXT, XML or XLS format, that nowadays are very popular, you also have the way out. You can convert your TXT or XML into CSV. Be very attentive, because doing this can cause the loss of data. Or import data right from the existing file choosing the corresponding File2Cart option.
If you want to import products to Magento along with product images you can use built-in Import/Export tool. But, it gets more difficult if you have some categories and manufacturers to be imported. Magento offers the manual management of categories, i.e. you can add, edit or delete categories by yourself. Of course, it will take a lot of time to do necessary work. To import manufacturers, in turn, you will need to write a PHP script that should be added to your store directory. If you need to save time and do everything fast, you can use File2Cart. It will import manufacturers and categories in a couple of minutes.
So, now all small details are revealed and you can begin the trouble-free import of your data to your Magento store. As they say, forewarned is forearmed!
